Position Summary

The Trailer Technician / Welder Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and fabricating trailer components and equipment. This position requires expertise in welding, mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, and safety compliance to ensure trailers remain roadworthy, reliable, and compliant with DOT regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Trailer Inspection & Maintenance

• Perform routine inspections of trailers, including structural, mechanical, and safety systems.
• Conduct preventive maintenance services according to company schedules.
• Identify and diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural issues.
• Complete DOT inspections and document findings accurately.

Welding & Fabrication

• Perform MIG, TIG, and stick welding on steel, aluminum, and other trailer materials.
• Repair cracks, damaged frames, crossmembers, floors, ramps, doors, and trailer bodies.
• Fabricate trailer components and custom modifications according to specifications.
• Operate cutting torches, plasma cutters, grinders, and fabrication equipment safely.

Mechanical Repairs

• Repair and replace brakes, wheel seals, bearings, hubs, suspensions, axles, and landing gear.
• Diagnose and repair air brake systems and pneumatic components.
• Repair lighting, wiring, electrical systems, and trailer accessories.
• Install and maintain hydraulic systems, lift gates, and related equipment.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Report safety hazards and equipment deficiencies promptly.

Documentation & Communication

• Complete work orders, repair records, and inspection reports accurately.
• Communicate repair recommendations and equipment status to supervisors.
• Track parts usage and assist with inventory management.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of trailer repair, welding, fabrication, or heavy equipment maintenance experience.
• Proficiency in MIG welding; TIG and stick welding experience preferred.
• Knowledge of trailer brake systems, suspension systems, and DOT regulations.
• Ability to read blueprints, repair manuals, and technical diagrams.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commercial trailer repair certification.
• DOT inspection certification.
• CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) preferred but not required.
• Experience with aluminum trailer repairs and fabrication.

Physical Requirements

• Lift up to 75 pounds regularly.
• Stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and climb throughout the workday.
• Work in varying weather conditions and shop environments.
• Ability to safely operate shop equipment and power tools.

Reports To: Maintenance Manager / Shop Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-Time
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, emergency repairs as needed.
